€600,000 upgrading works on William Street in Listowel to begin this month

Kerry County Council has announced that upgrading works worth almost €600,000 at William Street in Listowel are due to begin at the end of this month. The money is being invested by a number of agencies, including the Council, in the provision of a new road surface, the provision of new water mains, enhanced storm water drainage and the installation of new gas infrastructure in the area.

Irish Water will upgrade the water mains on William Street, Gas Networks Ireland are installing a new gas mains line, and Kerry County Council in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will lay a new road surface. The three bodies are coordinating their works to take place at the same time so that disruption to locals and visitors will be minimised. All of the work will be carried out by contractors Balfour Beatty CLG.

For ten weeks, beginning on Monday 26 September, William Street will be fully closed to traffic (day and night) to facilitate the enhancements and diversions for traffic will be put in place. No parking will be permitted on William Street and parking will be prohibited on one side of Church Street to enable a two-way traffic flow on Church Street for the duration of the works.

An engineer from Kerry County Council will be on site throughout to liaise with local residents and business owners on a daily basis in relation to traffic management and any other issues which might arise.

Cathaoirleach of the Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Aoife Thornton said: ‘I welcome this investment in Listowel town centre which will be of enormous benefit to local residents, businesses and visitors to the town as William Street is a vital traffic artery in north Kerry. I also welcome the fact that the water, gas and road enhancements are happening simultaneously to keep disruption to a minimum.’

Kerry County Council has today (2 September) advertised the intention to put in place a Road Closure for ten weeks from 26 September. Submissions on that intention to close William Street to traffic for the duration of the works can be made until 7 September.
