The centre was established by KES (the VEC in Kerry) as a Community Education Centre in 2001. Since its inception the centre has developed as a venue for the arts, providing courses in ceramics, painting, woodcarving, photography, dance, etc. to the adult population of the Iveragh area.
The centre also runs regular arts events; recitals, performances, art exhibitions, etc. A film studies group meet once a fortnight to watch and discuss art house films. The centre organises regular Book Club meetings and there is a Creative Writing Group based in the centre.
We aspire to providing a centre of excellence for the people of South Kerry to engage with the arts. The engagement will be on two levels. Firstly, they will be able to enjoy various aspects of the arts as spectators/audience, thus allowing them an access, which the peripherality of the area has so far hindered. Secondly, the centre will be a stimulus for developing participation in the arts – visual, performing and literary. We expect that the facility will be a huge asset to visitors to the area.
The centre includes an auditorium (100 seats) with projection facilities, a painting workshop, a ceramics workshop and a general craft workshop. We will have a grand piano (Yamaha C5) available for recitals, workshops etc. We have work spaces available which would suit artists-in-residence; a pottery, a very attractive tower room - suitable a writer or composer and other spaces suitable for painters etc.
