Kerry is hosting its second National Bike Week and is looking to get every person in the county on their bike, at least ONCE during Bike Week.
What better way to explore our environment than on our bikes, while at same time adding more years to our lives.
Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership are calling on everybody of all abilities and ages to join in on the raft of activities that are on offer, county wide.
Don’t worry if you have not been on the bike for years, just pull it out of the shed and dust off the cobwebs. During Bike Week, bicycle maintenance workshops are taking place countywide, run by local cycling clubs.
So whether you are getting ready for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle or shaking the rust off the chain, give you and your bike a health check.
National Bike Week takes place June 18 - 26 in conjunction with the Department of Transport, Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership (KRSP) Kerry County Council, An Taisce Green Schools and Kerry’s ;ocal Cycling Clubs.
Tying in with the hugely successful Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, this year will see the very first FAMILY PEDAL IN THE PARK, on the evening before the Ring of Kerry – Friday July 1st.
This is a family friendly 10k safe cycle which takes place in the traffic free environment of Killarney National Park. It is aimed and getting the entire family involved. All you need is a bike, child and helmet!
Registration opens at Deenagh Lodge (opposite the Cathedral) at 6:45pm and cycle starts at 7:30pm. Charge is €1 per person, and all funds will be donated to the 2011 Ring of Kerry nominated charities.
Other events include National COW Day – Cycle on Wednesday – June 22nd, where people are encouraged to cycle to school or work, or even better why not cycle with your child to school and then cycle to work! A number of national schools have joined up with Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club where children will be taught safe cycling skills.
The annual Currow Cycling Club leisure tour takes place on Sunday 19th June with routes of 50 & 80km to choose from. Sign on is at 9am at Currow Community Centre.
Sneem will be a hive of activity throughout the week with a Cycle on the Green mid-week as well as plans for a 20km cycle around the wonderful surroundings of Sneem on Sunday 26th June.
All week long there is a Bike to Your Books promotion, where library users who cycle to any branch of Kerry Library will not be charged to borrow books.
