Kerry County Council Cathaoirleach pays tribute to Jackie Healy Rae

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Brassil has paid tribute to former councillor and TD Jackie Healy Rae, who died on Friday, December 5th 2014.

Jackie Healy Rae was first co-opted to Kerry County Council in 1973, filling the seat left vacant by the death of Cllr Michael Doherty. In the local elections of 1974, he was elected to Kerry County Council. He served as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council in 1980-1981 and in 1995-1996 and served on the Council until the abolition of the Dual Mandate saw his son, Danny Healy Rae, replace him on the Council in September 2003.

He was elected to Dáil Éireann in 1997 and served the Kerry South constituency until 2011, when he stood down before the 2011 general election, with his son Michael capturing a seat.

Cllr John Brassil expressed his sympathies to the Healy Rae family and spoke of a link between the Brassil and Healy Rae families that had gone back for over 40 years.

“My father, Noel, was elected to the Council for the first time in 1974, and it was Jackie’s first election as well. Over their years in the Chamber they formed a solid friendship and I certain that they will be having some great political discussions once more when they meet.”

Cllr Brassil also remembered his time in the Chamber with Jackie. “I was fortunate to have spent time as a Councillor while Jackie was still in the Chamber. He went out of his way to make me feel welcome and to give me valuable advice, something I appreciated at the time,” he said.

“While working closely with him in the Council chamber, I was able to see up close his skill as a Councillor and as a TD, and I also saw the huge amount of work he did on behalf of his constituents and on behalf of this county. He served Kerry very well during his time in Dáil Éireann and I think that his time spent as a County Councillor here in Kerry was of great benefit to him in the Dáil.

“I would like to pay my respects to the Healy Rae family on his passing. The word legend is often used too often these days, but Jackie definitely was a legend, and a character. He had huge intelligence, along with tremendous wit and humour, but he was a man who had a kind word for everyone, and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.”
