Kerry Comhairle na nOg

Comhairle na nÓg is part of a Government initiative to ensure that young people are involved in decision making at local and national level.   The partnership agencies involved in the Comhairle are Kerry County Council, the Kerry Community and Voluntary Forum, Kerry Diocesan Youth Service, Kerry Education Service and the Children’s Services Committee.

Each year there is a County Comhairle na nÓg event at which an AGM is held. At the Comhairle, young people from all over Kerry come together at County level, to discuss issues that affect their daily lives.

Participation in Comhairle na nÓg results in the following outcomes:

It allows young people to develop personal and social responsibility

It engages young people more fully in their community

It prepares young people for participation in National Democracy

It improves the relevance of local services for young people

It assists in improving the social and communication skills of young people

It recognises children and young people as a valuable resource.

AGM for 2012 held on 12 October

103 young people attended from 21 schools

The 2013 AGM will be held on Friday 04th October 2013.

The day consists of a series of facilitated workshops to discuss themes relevant to young people.  Young people select the themes to be addressed and in the past these have included Youth Sexual Health, Youth Mental Health, Education, Drugs & Alcohol and Facilities/Activities.  Each school is invited to nominate 6 young people to attend the event, ideally of different ages (between 12 and 18 years.


Dáil na nÓg

Dáil na nÓg is an annual Youth Parliament that meets under the auspices of the Minister for Children and was one of the recommendations contained in the National Children’s Strategy (2000). It provides a national forum for young people to raise and debate issues of concern. The Dáil is intended as a forum for children’s and young people’s opinions to be fed into the development of public policy.

The Dáil na nÓg meets annually normally in November in Croke Park, Dublin where the delegates will meet with Minister Frances Fitzgerald T.D. and other decision makers in the Government.
