Mayor launches first Kerry Integration Strategy
The Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Pat Leahy today launched the Kerry Integration Strategy 2010 – 2012 at Tralee Library. This plan is aimed at improving the quality of life of immigrants and focuses on actions supporting the integration of immigrants into the county.
The strategy is an initiative of the Kerry County Development Board (KCDB). In its plan for the integrated development of Kerry, KCDB identified Equality and Social inclusion as one of its priority Action Areas and established the Social Inclusion Measures (SIM) group to help achieve this aim.
Operating under the Social Inclusion Measures group, the Integration Task Group (ITG) was established in 2007 with the aim of bringing together statutory, community and voluntary bodies to develop a strategy which will assist the integration of immigrants into the community. This two year multi-agency plan provides a co-ordinated approach for integration measures to address the social, economic and cultural needs of immigrants living in the county.
ITG member groups include Kerry County Council, Health Service Executive, KASI (Killarney Asylum Seeker Initiative), An Garda Síochána, Kerry Volunteer Centre, Tralee Citizen Information Centre, Tralee Town Council, Kerry Diocesan Youth Service, Kerry Education Services, Department of Education & Science, FAS, Department of Social & Family Affairs, IRD Duhallow, KADE, Kerry Community & Voluntary Forum, Kerry County Library, Kerry County Childcare Committee, North & East Kerry Development, Tralee Asylum Refugee Migrant Services (TARMS), Unique Voice and Tralee International Resource Centre (TIRC).
Divided into four key areas, Education and Training, Information and Networking, Employment and Access to Public/Private Services, the two year plan sets out specific targets and timeframes, actions required and identifies agencies who will be working to deliver these goals.
The next step for this project is implementing the key actions identified. A multi-agency Implementation Group has been established who will be responsible for monitoring the strategy to ensure that the targets set are being progressed according to the agreed timescale.
The Strategy has been translated into French and Polish and is available on Kerry County Council’s website and Kerry Library website.
