Community Support Fund 2016

Grants of €750,000 allocated to community projects in Kerry under Community Support Fund 2016

Almost 350 projects and initiatives countywide will benefit from Kerry County Council’s Community Support Fund following approval by councillors this week of €750,000 in grants to community and voluntary groups, residents’ groups, Tidy Towns groups, Chamber Alliances and other organisations.

The first round of projects – in the Tralee Municipal District – were approved by members at a meeting of councillors last week while elected members in Killarney, Listowel and South and West Kerry agreed on projects to receive funding last Thursday and Friday.

The Community Support Fund, now in its second year, has a very positive impact in communities and has seen an increase of 50% on the number of applications received last year. Following a thorough assessment process, every eligible project which met the criteria for funding received an allocation this year and councillors in each of the four Municipal Districts were unanimous in their decisions.

Countywide, the allocation of €750,000 in grants under the various headings breaks down as follows:

Community Based Tourism, Festivals and Events – 31.1%
Community Economic Innovation – 23.2%
Community Tidy Towns Initiatives and Amenity Projects – 13.2%
Minor Enhancement to Community Facilities – 11.5%
Community Planning and Project Development – 9.9%
Community Sport and Physical Activity Programmes – 8.4%
Community Seed Capital – 2.7%

Niamh O’Sullivan, Head of the Community Department with Kerry County Council said the though the number of applications far exceeded the available funding, it is hoped that the grants will have positive impacts in communities. ‘Applications were assessed with the clear objectives of the Community Support Fund in mind and the grants awarded reflect this.

‘This fund is, of course, just one of the ways in which Kerry County Council supports community groups and projects, which are eligible quite frequently, for example, for allocations by individual councillors from their Municipal District allocations,’ she said.

Kerry County Council will be inviting applications for the 2017 Community Support Fund as early as November 2016 and it is intended to hold local advice clinics to support groups applying for funding.

‘Projects funded under the 2016 Fund will enhance the vibrancy and physical appearance of the county’s towns and villages; they will improve the quality of community services and the capacity of communities to address local needs. The grants will also support tourism growth and economic innovation with support being provided to projects that will benefit the local economy and generate a sense of community and civic pride,’ said Niamh O’Sullivan.
