Sneem Playground Official Opening

Released: 17 December 2007

The fruits of co-operation were on display in Sneem on Sunday last, when the children’s playground was officially opened by the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Michael Healy Rae.

Christmas spirit was in plentiful supply, as the Mayor paid tribute to all those who had contributed to ensuring the playground grew from a dream to reality.

“You have to pay credit to all of those involved in making this day happen,” Mayor Healy stated. “Kerry County Council, through their Play Policy, has put in a huge effort to ensure that the children in Sneem will have play facilities over the years.

“However, there were so many others involved that it was truly a team effort. In particular, the local community did a huge amount of work, and contributed financially to the playground project, with the Sneem Playground Committee working overtime to ensure that the finish line was reached.”

The Mayor also paid tribute to South Kerry Development Partnership who contributed €46,000 in LEADER funding to help ensure the project advanced to completion.

This is ninth playground that has been opened in Kerry since Kerry County Council launched its Play Policy ‘Developing Play in Kerry’ two years ago.

The Policy helps local communities to access the information needed to drive playground projects forward, while Kerry County Council’s Community & Enterprise staff provide support, technical assistance and advice.

In addition to funding from the South Kerry Development Partnership, Kerry County Council also contributed funding through its Capital Amenities Levy scheme, while fundraising from the local community ensured that the spirit of co-operation is alive and well in Sneem.
