Contract signed for Coolcaslagh Landfill Closure Works

Released: 04 October 2007

The contract signing for the Coolcaslagh Landfill Closure Works, took place in Áras an Chontae on Thursday, with the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Michael Healy welcoming the works.

The works, which are estimated to cost just over €1m, will be carried out by Wills Bros Ltd. These will see the existing capping of the landfill site strengthened, as well as the installation of a gas collection pipework connected to gas venting wells, installation of barrier liner, drainage swales and 1m thick soil capping.

With a 20 week time-span, once completed, the landfill site is intended to return to a natural heathland, in keeping with the predominant natural landscape in the area.

“This is terrific news for the townland of Coolcaslagh, ensuring the safe and proper closure of the Landfill, and restoration of the site to a natural state,” Cllr Healy Rae explained.

“I am also delighted to have Wills Bros. involved in the contract. They have a long and successful association with Kerry County Council projects over the years.”

The Coolcaslagh Landfill was operated by Kerry County Council from 1986 to 1998, taking in municipal waste from the Killarney Area. In its place is the Coolcaslagh Waste Transfer Station, which transfers waste to the North Kerry Landfill at Muingnaminnane.

“One of the conditions of the waste licence for the Waste Transfer Station was that Kerry County Council had to carry out site closure works for the Landfill site,” Director of Environment, Anne Haugh explained.

“Since the closure a temporary cap cover of sandy clay has been in place, and these works will finalise the job, restoring the landfill site to a natural state.”
