Catherine Young awarded third term as Dancer in Residence for Kerry.

Catherine Young, dancer in residence with Kerry County Council since September 2005 has been awarded a third term and will take up residency again in September 2007 through March 2008.

Over the course of her previous two residencies, Catherine has worked closely with Siamsa Tire, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland training their core company of dancers as well as setting new works on the company’s dancers. She has also worked throughout the county with various schools and community groups sharing her skills and dance styles that span the range from contemporary/modern dance to Hip Hop, Jazz and African dance as well as yoga.

The residency has allowed for dance to be shared throughout the county in all regions and at all levels both community and professional level alike and has resulted in two major shows each year to full houses. In 2007, Catherine was commissioned by Kerry County Council to create a full length dance work “Athmhachnaimh” (Reflections) which premiered at Siamsa in March and part of this show has now been picked up by Dublin Fringe Festival and will be performed as ‘Commingle’ (Coming Together) at the Fringe Festival September 10-12, the only Kerry based work being performed in the festival.

During her third term, Catherine will give workshops throughout the county working again with various schools and community groups but will also be teaching regular weekly classes in Modern Dance, hip-hop/jazz funk and African dance to build skill level of those interested in pursuing regular dance training be it for fun or fitness or love of the art form. As in her prior residencies, Catherine will continue to pursue her own artistic and choreographic endeavors during her time in Kerry and will select a core number of groups to work with the goal of working towards a final performance at the end of the residency.
