Kerry County Council honours FEXCO founder

Released: 15 June 2007

Kerry County Council paid tribute to FEXCO founder, and Executive Chairman, Dr Brian McCarthy, at a civic reception held in the Killorglin Area Services Centre on Friday, June 15.

With FEXCO currently employing over 1,500 staff in offices in 14 countries around the world, and recording annual turnover of over €142m, the success of the company has been phenomenal since its formation in 1981.

But tribute was also paid to Dr McCarthy’s civic mindedness, his support of community, social and voluntary organisations in the Mid Kerry region, and the sense of confidence he has helped to bring to Killorglin town.

According to Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Ted Fitzgerald, the rise of FEXCO has been one of the success stories in Irish business.

“Brian McCarthy spotted a niche in the market, providing foreign exchange facilities for tourists, and took the risk of leaving a secure job in AIB back in 1981,” he explained.

“In continuing to base his operations in Killorglin, Brian has given the town a huge vote of confidence, and the town has benefited greatly.

“In addition to providing crucial employment in Killorglin, Cahirciveen and the surrounding areas, he has worked hard to see Killorglin grow, physically, economically and socially, and for that, we are hugely grateful.”

Deputy County Manager John O’Connor pointed out that the success of FEXCO proved that it was possible for entrepreneurs to base their operations in Kerry, and successfully transact business with the rest of the world.

“You are looking at FEXCO, with an annual turnover of €142m, conducting electronic financial transactions all over the world, as well as providing customer support to major multi-nationals like Coca-Cola, all from their Kerry offices,” he explained.

“Being located in Kerry has not proven to be a barrier in FEXCO’s rise, and we have the added advantage of a very high standard of living, which can prove to be a huge attraction to companies and their staff.”
