Minister Opens New Playground in Fenit

Released: 09 February 2007

Under brightly coloured palm trees in Fenit, Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, Dick Roche TD, assisted by Fenit pupil Joseph Nagle, officially opened the new playground.

Children in Fenit, Spa and surrounding areas can now enjoy a state of the art facility, thanks to the hard work and commitment of the Spa/Fenit Development Association and Kerry County Council’s Play Policy.

The Fenit playground is the sixth to be opened in Kerry since the Council launched its Play Policy ‘Developing Play in Kerry’ two years ago.

Catering for children up to 12 years of age, the young pupils from St Brendan’s National School in Fenit and Spa National School took ownership of the project from an early stage.

“The children themselves had a say in the design, along with the Spa/Fenit Development Association, while Kerry County Council gave assistance and advice,” Niamh O’Sullivan from Kerry County Council explained.

“They are the real architects of the project and it is an excellent example of how the local community and Kerry County Council can work together to address a local need.”

And to keep ownership of the playground among the children, St Brendan’s NS student, Joseph Nagle was chosen to assist Minister Roche in the opening.

The project cost approximately €190,000, incorporating equipment from the ‘Children’s Playground Company’ and ‘Go Play Limited’.

Funding was provided by the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government’s Playground Grant Scheme, Kerry County Council’s Community, Environmental & Recreational Development Funding and local fundraising and contributions.

“This playground will fill a need in the local community and is a fantastic asset to the Fenit area,” Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Ted Fitzgerald explained.

“Great credit must be given to everybody who was involved in seeing the project through to fruition. We look forward to seeing other communities around the county and the children of Kerry benefiting from such playgrounds, and getting plenty of exercise and fresh air.”
