Council signs €6.5m Landfill extension contract

Released: 23 June 2008

The contract signing for the €6.5m extension to the North Kerry Landfill took place on Monday, June 23rd in Áras an Chontae.

Phase Nine of the North Kerry Landfill Development Works will see the creation of new cells, designed to accept commercial and domestic refuse, which will extend the life of the North Kerry Landfill until at least 2026. In addition, work will take place on capping the cells from earlier phases, under the terms of the landfill’s EPA licence.

Wills Bros. Ltd of Mayo have been awarded the contract, which is expected to take 18 months to complete. Tobin Consulting Engineers are acting as consulting engineers for the project.

The initial stages of the contract will see the capping works take place, along with the development of three cells. Preparation works for the development of further cells will also take place.

Currently, a total of 60,000 tonnes of waste are landfilled each year at the North Kerry Landfill. However, increased levels of recycling and new regulations are expected to see this figure greatly decrease, increasing the lifespan of the Landfill.

Opened in 1994, the North Kerry Landfill was the first in Ireland to operate under a licence from the EPA. It caters for domestic and commercial refuse from all over Kerry and includes a large recycling area, which allows the public to recycle a large quantity of goods free of charge.

These include white goods, paper, cardboard, glass, clothes, batteries, paint cans, glass clippings and many more.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Michael Healy Rae welcomed the project. “The North Kerry Landfill has taken domestic and commercial refuse over the past 14 years, and these extension works are necessary,” he said

“I would also like to congratulate Wills Bros Ltd, who will be contractors on the project. They have carried out a number of projects in Kerry, and I am pleased to say that the work has been of a very high quality.
