Dynamic Killarney Pupils Stride to School

Released: 23 April 2008

Two Killarney primary schools will become the first in Kerry to take part in a 'Park & Stride' scheme which encourages active transport among pupils.

Both Holy Cross Mercy School and the Presentation Monastery are taking part in this new scheme, which was launched on Wednesday, April 23 and is being promoted by the HSE South, in conjunction with Kerry County Council, Kerry Local Sports Partnership, Killarney Town Council and An Garda Síochána.

The scheme places an emphasis on active transport and road safety, and it is hoped that an added bonus will see a reduction in traffic congestion outside both schools in the mornings and afternoons.

“We’re hoping that 'Park & Stride' will provide a number of benefits,” Kerry County Council Road Safety Education Officer, Maria O’Regan explained. “It should increase the daily physical activity levels of pupils, parents and teachers while also improving road safety skills and reducing traffic congestion at the school gate.

Health Promotion Officer with the HSE Anne Culloty has stressed the importance of regular exercise for young people. "The recommended daily exercise for children is at least one hour per day and 30 minutes per day for adults. We hope that the 'Park & Stride' scheme will encourage both pupils and parents to become more active in their daily lives".

As part of the initiative, Maria O'Regan has been visiting classes in each of the schools in an attempt to raise awareness on road safety prior to the introduction of the scheme. "It is very important that each pupil is aware of the daily issues they are faced with when walking to school. We hope that through this scheme the pupils will become more cautious and responsible when using the roads,” she said.

'Park & Stride' will operate on a WOW basis - Walk on Wednesday. Parents are encouraged to park their cars at designated "Park & Stride Stations" and then walk to the school gate. These Stations include the Port Road, the Cathedral Car Park, Killarney Community Car Park, High Street Car Park and, St. Mary's Parish Hall.

Sports Coordinator with Kerry Local Sports Partnership, Cora Carrigg emphasises that the ‘Park & Stride’ six-week active transport initiative could not happen without linking in with the key partners whom are actively engaged in establishing this programme, a true example of Partnership.
