Rose of Tralee to open Library’s Festival Exhibition

Released: 11 August 2008

The Rose of Tralee, Lisa Murtagh will officially open Kerry Library’s Historical Exhibition of The International Rose of Tralee & Festival of Kerry on Saturday, August 23rd, at 11am, in Tralee Library.

As the Rose of Tralee Festival approaches its 49th year, the Library’s Festival Exhibition has become one of the cornerstones of the celebrations, remembering past festivals and former contestants.

A hugely popular exhibition, each Festival sees hundreds of visitors flock to Tralee Library to view pictures spanning the history of the Festival, memorabilia and the moving story of Mary O’Connor and William Mulchinock, a story of an impossible love, a forced goodbye and an untimely death all of which are the inspiration to the song -The Rose of Tralee.

While the official opening takes place on Saturday, August 23rd at 11am, the exhibition itself is open to the public from Saturday, August 16th, and is free of charge.

Traditionally, the exhibition is officially launched each year by the reigning Rose of Tralee. This year Lisa Murtagh will speak of her year’s adventures both here and in the international Rose Centres abroad. The 2008 contesting Roses will also attend as they are always eager to see events of previous years.

The official opening of the Exhibition also serves another purpose: It’s the perfect opportunity for the public, both young and old to meet up with the new Roses. Plenty of people will turn up armed with camera and autograph book in what has turned out to be a terrific day for all. Everyone is welcome on the day to meet the new Roses and look at the stars of previous Festivals.
