Double Success for Kerry at Pride of Place Awards

Released: 10 November 2008

Kerry tasted success on the double at the sixth annual Pride of Place Awards 2008, which were held in Cappoquin, Waterford on Saturday night last.

The awards honour the work carried out by community groups in the island of Ireland, and are promoted by Co-Operation Ireland.

With three community groups from Kerry short-listed for the awards, there was success for Bonane Community Co-Operative Society, who captured the Heritage Award and for Valentia Island Community Group who won the Islands Award.

The Tralee Community Development Project was also short-listed for the Pride of Place Awards, for their efforts in supporting local initiatives which seek to tackle the root causes of poverty and inequalities.

“The fact that we had three finalists and two winners in the Pride of Place Awards is fantastic news for the groups involved and for the county as a whole,” Kerry County Council’s Director of Community & Enterprise, John Breen explained.

The three groups were selected through the Kerry Community Awards, which showcases the very best of community effort in Kerry. According to County Manager Tom Curran, the dedication by these groups helps to make Kerry a better place.

“It was an honour to be present in Cappoquin last weekend, to see the efforts of the community groups recognised,” he said. “It was a great source of pride for me to see the work of the Kerry community groups highlighted, and to see that the work they do is so highly appreciated, not just by Kerry people, but by the judges in the Pride of Place Awards.”

The Bonane Community Group is committed to preserving and enhancing their local environment. Their latest initiative has seen them develop a Heritage Park, which highlights the heritage and archaeological aspects of the area.

The Valentia Island Community have carried out great work, with 26 community groups coming together over the past number of years to identify community needs, and target solutions.

President of Ireland, Mary McAleese attended the Awards Ceremony on Saturday night, and presented the Category winners with their Awards.
