Kerry Local Authorities launch 2009 Local Elections website

Released: 02 June 2009

Kerry County Council and the Town Councils of Tralee, Killarney and Listowel have launched a Local Elections 2009 website, covering all aspects of the forthcoming Local Elections.

The site is built on Kerry County Council’s new web platform, and offers an interactive elections service. As well as a comprehensive guide to how elections are organised and how the voting system works, the site features details and photographs for each of the candidates, for both the Kerry County Council Electoral Areas and each Town Council.

“The aim of the website is to give each voter in Kerry as much information as possible about the candidates before they make their choice in the polling booth on Friday, June 5th,” Kerry County Council’s Head of IT, Brian Looney explained. “It also contains Kerry County Council’s new ATOMIK interactive service to help voters locate their polling station.”

On the day of the election count, the website will change purpose, and will carry results from the Count Centres around Kerry, updated as the results are declared.

“We are also looking to use Web 2.0 technology to stream live feed from the major Count Centres,” Brian Looney explained. “It will mean that even if voters aren’t present at the Count, they will be able to keep up to date on what’s happening, when it’s happening.”

The Kerry Local Elections website is a fore-runner to the main Council website which is currently being revamped and will be launched during the summer.
“Use of the Internet as an information service is growing day by day and we are hoping that voters in Kerry will be able to use this to exercise their democratic right to vote on Friday, June 5th, and follow the results during the count,” Brian Looney said.
