Ballyseedy Wood scoops National Award

Released: 25 October 2009

Kerry County Council has won the prestigious RDS 2009 Bio-Diverse Forestry Woodlands award for Ballyseedy Wood. The announcement was made in Kilkenny Castle, last Thursday evening with the presentation of the RDS Silver medal and a cheque for €2,000 by Minister Tony Kileen, T.D. to the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. Bobby O’Connell. The award was made to the Council for its exceptional example of strategic planning and management in the development of Ballyseedy Wood as a sustainable woodland recreational amenity for the people of Tralee and surrounding area. In the 22 year history of the awards, Kerry County Council is the first state body or local authority to achieve this unique honour. In accepting the award, on behalf of the people of Kerry, the Mayor “honoured the commitment of the local community who had formed the Ballyseedy Wood Action Group in the early 1990’s to purchase this fantastic natural amenity and for having the vision to ensure its preservation for future generations”. He also acknowledged the sensitive works carried out on the woods by the staff of the Council and the support of the Forest Council, the Heritage Council and the National Parks and Wildlife. The President of the RDS, Mr. Martin Mealy, complimented the structures put in place by the Council for the preservation of the woods, with its unique bio-diversity and cultural heritage, for future generations and stated that “the standard of work carried out was in accordance with the very best conservation practice”. In particular, he exemplified the management of Ballyseedy Woods to all farm managers, particularly in Kerry. The woods were planted by the Blennerhassett’s in the early 18th century, during the plantation of Munster, when the RDS was first founded in 1729. With over 22 native tree species alone, Ballyseedy Wood is a rich, bio-diverse resource which has both educational and recreational value for the people of Kerry and visitors alike. The Bio-Diverse Forestry/Woodlands Award was implemented to encourage forest habitats for ecological benefit.
