President McAleese officially opens Valentia Island Playground

Released: 24 September 2009

As part of her visit to Kerry on Thursday, 24 September, President Mary McAleese visited Valentia Island to officially open the Cracow Community Park & Playground in Knightstown, at 4pm The project, which began in 2006, is situated in the community field in Knightstown. This piece of land was bequeathed in 1933 by the Knight of Kerry, as a recreational ground for the inhabitants of the county. This is the 12th playground that has been opened in Kerry since Kerry County Council adopted its play policy ‘Developing Play in Kerry’ in 2004. The Council’s Community & Enterprise team have worked with the communities in establishing the playgrounds which have provided crucial facilities for children around the county. Funding for the project was provided by Kerry County Council and the South Kerry Development Partnership’s Salmon Hardship Fund, which allocated €101,000. In addition, funding was also received from the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism, the local community and local businesses. According to Deputy Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Arthur Spring, the playground shows the benefit of a strong community working together for the betterment of the area. “Credit must go to the organising committee for their efforts, which have paid off today. However, they were surrounded by a community who recognised the benefits of the project and provided moral and financial support. “The work that went into bringing this playground from the drawing board to reality reflects the terrific community spirit that is present on Valentia Island. Chair of the organising committee, Rosaleen O’Connell thanked all who had contributed to the project. “We have a terrific local community, who really backed this project,” she said. “We are also looking at further developments within the community field, and are delighted that the President was able to perform the opening here today.”
