Exchange of Licences

Exchange of driving licence applications must be accompanied by:

Application form (D900) fully completed.

Licence from recognised country – see below

If licence is lost, stolen or destroyed, a D8A form signed and stamped at your local Garda station and an original letter of entitlement from issuing authority of original licence must accompany your exchange application.

If the name on the current licence application form differs from that on the driving licence being exchanged, supporting documentation e.g. original marriage certificate or original deed poll must accompany the application.

Two recent passport type photographs signed on the back by the applicant.

Medical report (D501) if applicable – see notes on Medical Reports

If applicant previously held an Irish driving licence please supply details, e.g., issuing authority, old address, etc.

Fee - 25 EUR for ten years or 15 EUR for three years.

* Applications must be accompanied by an official translation

A person holding a valid driving licence issued by a Member State of the EU or of the European Economic Area who is resident in Ireland may drive in Ireland until expiry of that licence which can then be exchanged.

If you are not from any of the above countries (for example Canada, or USA), and you hold a national driving licence from your own country, you may drive in Ireland for the duration of your temporary visit (up to 12 months).
