Star Power Astronomy Course

Please find attached information on the forthcoming accredited Astronomy Course for star gazing guides delivered by University College Cork and the Cork Institute of Technology at the Royal Hotel, Valentia from Friday 26th February (Registration from 5pm) to lunchtime Sunday 28th February.  Topics to be covered include:


·         A Brief Astronomical History

·         Observing the sky with your eye

·         Observing the sky with Telescopes and Binoculars

·         Our Solar System and other Solar Systems

·         Stars and their Lives

·         Exotic objects – from Black Holes to gamma-ray bursters and beyond

·         The origin and fate of the Universe

·         Finding out what’s in the sky - from star charts to software

·         Outdoor Observation of Night Sky on Friday and Saturday night (weather permitting) or

·         Indoor Question & Answer.


The participation fee is €50 which includes lunch on Saturday.  The full programme and details of overnight and weekend accommodation packages are attached.

For people who wish to avail of the UCC accreditation for 5 ECTS (which is not essential in order to partake in the course) , it is important to bring a Passport or Birth Certificate. 

It would also  be helpful to bring binoculars/telescopes  and depending on the weather, there should be some outside viewing of the night sky, so, warm clothing will be essential.
