Kerry County Council launched its second Scéim Gaeilge at the Oireachtas in Killarney on Thursday, October 28th, with Deputy Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Marie Moloney, officially launching the publication.
The aim of the Scéim Gaeilge is to promote the use of Kerry County Council’s and the Town Councils’ services through Irish and to ensure that management and staff have a programme of measures in order to develop and improve the level of Irish Language Services in the Local Authority.
“It is the aim of this Irish Language Scheme to promote the use of services through Irish among the Irish speaking communities both inside and outside the Gaeltacht, and in particular to protect the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Gaeltacht areas and promote Irish as the community language,” Roibeard Ó hEartáin, Irish Officer with Kerry County Council explained.
“This scheme builds on both Kerry County Council’s Irish Action Plan of 2001-2006 and our First Irish Scheme. Kerry Local Authorities current Irish Language policy is laid out in this scheme, and the scheme contains a commitment to delivering our services through the medium of Irish to customers who want them.”
Since the Irish Action Plan was implemented in 2001, Kerry County Council has made large advances within the organisation in relation to this goal. There are nominated Irish Officers within each department, staff are provided with Irish Language Classes, while information produced by the Local Authority, such as signage, policy documents and forms, are all provided bilingually.
“As a county with two Gaeltacht areas, and a rich tradition of Irish language and culture, it is important that Kerry County Council supports and promotes Irish as a community language” Deputy Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Marie Moloney stated.
“Our County Development Plan contains objectives to protect and promote the Irish language and culture, and this Scheme will ensure that those looking to access services through Irish from the Council, can do so.”
