Existing Water Supply Schemes
EPA Remedial Action List
The Kerry Water Services Assessment of Needs 2006, mentioned earlier, identified the need for a comprehensive Drinking Water Quality Improvement Programme as a priority for Water Services. As a result, Water Services carried out an assessment of existing water supply schemes and identified a work programme estimated at €26.5m. Some of the works identified in the assessment are currently being addressed under the Small Schemes Programme and the Minor Improvement Programme. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency included 41 of Kerry County Council’s Public Water Supplies on a Remedial Action List (RAL) in their publication “The Provision and Quality of Drinking Water in Ireland – A Report for the Years 2006-2007”.
Kerry County Council submitted an application to the DoEHLG for funding in respect of the 41 Water Supplies included in the EPA Remedial Action List in June 2008.
In July 2008 the Department approved works to the value of €9.860m to be carried out over a two year period. Works costing €0.956m were approved for 2008 with the remainder to be carried out in 2009. The works consist mainly of the following:-
Upgrade Disinfection Facilities € 1.610m
Monitoring and Alarms € 0.250m
Treatment Facilities € 8.000m
Total € 9.860m
Good progress has been made in getting the works underway and Chlorine Dosing Pumps, Chlorine Analysers, Turbidity Meters and Flow Meters are currently being fitted.
The works will be 75% funded by DoEHLG but the remaining 25% has to be provided by Kerry County Council from its own resources. The breakdown of funding is therefore as follows:

The local contribution of €2.465m is being funded from the Development Contributions receipts in accordance with the Planning and Development Acts.
When completed at the end of this year, all of the schemes included in the project will have increased protection from contamination, and will afford the served consumers, a more robust supply of pure and wholesome drinking water.
