Severe Weather Warning Update

Weather alert from Kerry County Council for issue to the General Public – 2.pm Friday 4th December 2015

Met Eireann have issued a level RED severe weather warning for Kerry, which is valid from 6pm today (Friday 4th December) until 3 am on Sunday the 6th December as follows: -

“Incessant falls of heavy rain overnight and for all of Saturday. Accumulations in excess of 70mm (approx 3 inches) of rain expected with greater totals on higher ground”

“Strong gale force southwest winds with mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h will gust 90 to 100km/h are also forecast”

Under these conditions there is a high risk of localized flooding, particularly in areas that have been prone to flooding in the past. With the high winds there is also a risk of damage or injury from falling trees or flying debris.

Kerry County Council wish to advise the general public and road users to take the following precautions:-

Property owners, particularly in areas prone to flooding should take appropriate measures to minimize the risk of flooding to their properties

The public is advised to stay clear of rivers and streams which may be in flood

Cycling is not recommended under these conditions and pedestrians should be extra vigilant

Property Owners should ensure that bins and loose objects such as hoardings and signage are secured or removed.

Motorists should exercise extreme caution on our roads, particularly where roads may be flooded and to heed warning signs.

Avoid any unnecessary journeys.

Please check on elderly neighbours and vulnerable members in the community
