Let’s Get Kerry Walking the Distance Week from 24th to 30th September

Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership invites everyone to participate in Kerry’s first ever countywide walking event. This is a weeklong event taking place from the 24th to 30th September. Communities all over Kerry will be donning their walking shoes in an effort to get more active.

This is a great opportunity to start a new routine of getting out and getting active.  All events are free to attend. If you would like to get involved or take part in any of the activities take a look at the website for a full schedule of events. www.getkerrywalking.ie.
Community led walking groups and clubs are welcoming new people to join their walks. This is a fantastic opportunity to socialise, meet new people and get active while having a bit of fun. Walks are taking place all over the county Ardfert, Castlegregory, Killarny, Killorglin and  Listowel.
Walking-themed workshops are on offer to show you something new. Take the whole family out on Saturday 29th, for a wildlife discovery workshop in Knockreer House, Killarney.  There is something for everyone to learn, while getting outside and getting active. Or get to know more about the stars in our Astronomy for Walkers workshop happening on Ballinskelligs Beach.

Askea Calnan, Community Walking Programme Facilitator says “I am really looking forward to the week.  There are loads of event happening to suit everyone.  I look forward to meeting new people who share a common interest in walking.

“There is a range of walks to suit people of all ages and fitness levels.  Arthritis Ireland are facilitating three walks during the week, two taking place in Tralee and one in Killarney.  These walks are suitable to those who would be very new to walking or struggle with walking.  They use Nordic walking poles which gives the whole body a work out.

“There will be guided walks with some of Kerry’s professional walkers in Ballybunion, Ballinskelligs, and Killarney.  This is a wonderful opportunity to explore new parts of the county.  It is also a chance to step up your walking game and try something new.

“If you are in the mood for more of a challenge there are several walks taking place from Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the Gap of Dunloe, some are more challenging that others,” she said

Let’s Get Kerry Walking is a joint initiative of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, made possible by partnering with Kerry County Council and Information Technology, Tralee.

The walking week is coinciding with the National Walking Day and the European Week of Sport which aims to promote sport and physical activity nationally and across Europe.
