LISTOWEL RETAINS GREEN FLAG FOR 2019

Listowel’s Childers Park and Woodlands has retained its Green Flag for 2019 – the only such Green Flag in County Kerry. The announcement was made at a ceremony at Maynooth University today and which was attended the Cathaoirleach of the Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, MD Manager Joan McCarthy and MD Officer Andrew Smith.

The Green Flag Award for Parks Scheme is an international standard for well managed public parks and green spaces. The scheme aims to encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways.

The Green Flag Award Scheme encourages high environmental performance and good management. Parks and green spaces are judged against eight key criteria. Where certain criteria are not met, applicants can provide justifications that may be taken into account.

This year a record 60 Irish Parks and Gardens from across the Republic of Ireland are receiving 2019 Green Flags. The Green Flag Award is operated within the Republic of Ireland by An Taisce Environmental Education Unit.

Cllr Moloney said the honour was testament to the tremendous work being done to develop and sustain Childers Park and Woodlands as an attractive public amenity and he thanked all those who had contributed to maintaining the park to such a high standard.
