Archaeologically Protected Graveyards
A total of 93 graveyards in the ownership of Kerry county Council are listed in the Record of Monuments & Places and statutorily protected under the terms of the National Monuments Acts 1930-2004, a 94th graveyard at Garfinny, Dingle is a National Monument in State ownership. Of these 94 graveyards nine contain structures that are in the ownership or guardianship of the State and are deemed National Monuments while the graveyards at Killagha, Milltown and Kyrie Eleison, Abbeydorney contains structures deemed to be National Monuments in Local Authority ownership.
Between 2006-2012 Kerry County Council in partnership with the Heritage Council undertook a project to survey all of these archaeologically protected graveyards. Only the old sections of these graveyards were surveyed not modern extensions and the record of burials in the surveys reflect the situation at the time of each survey. The map below shows the location of each graveyard and the year of survey. The survey for each of the graveyards is available below in PDF format which are listed below.
