Council signs contracts to build 88 Social Houses

CONTRACTS FOR SEVEN HOUSING SCHEMES WORTH €17M

Kerry County Council (6th February 2020) signed contracts to start the construction of seven different housing schemes which will add 88 houses to Kerry’s social housing stock.

The seven contracts, which are worth a combined €17m, will see the construction of social housing in Ardfert, Kenmare, Lixnaw, Rathmore, Ballybunion and Glenbeigh.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher, welcomed the contract signings and pointed to the quality of social houses provided in Kerry.

“We are fortunate to have quality construction companies in Kerry whose experience and track record in the delivery of housing projects is second to none,” he said. “This has enabled Kerry County Council to quickly progress projects such as these.”

The Cathaoirleach also referenced the new building standards which these houses will be constructed under. “Modern building standards have greatly improved over the past decade, and those living in these new houses will benefit from high energy efficiency standards that will significantly reduce energy consumption.”

Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, also welcomed the signing of the contracts, highlighting that all 88 houses were due for completion before the end of the year.

“The provision of suitable housing for people all over Kerry is a key objective for this Council,” she explained. “We have a large housing stock of over 4,000 social houses in Kerry, and we are continually seeking ways to ensure that those looking for housing options in Kerry are catered for, not just in the larger towns, but all around the county.

“Under the Rebuilding Ireland Programme, we have been set high targets for the provision of additional social housing and our aim is to achieve those targets, whether through Build, Acquisition or Leasing.

“In particular, I want to pay tribute to our Housing Capital Infrastructure Unit for advancing these projects through the design and planning stage, so that when funding becomes available, we are in a position to progress these projects.”
