Hazardous Household Waste

Many household items that are in everyday use are hazardous and left over product and packaging should be disposed of properly and NEVER placed in your refuse bin as they are toxic and pose a considerable health and environmental hazard.

Examples of Household Hazardous Waste:

  • Aerosols
  • Batteries
  • Cleaning agents e.g. bleach, white spirits
  • Corrosives
  • Fluorescent light tubes
  • Herbicides
  • Oil Based Paints/paint thinners/varnishes
  • Pesticides
  • Waste engine oil

Dispose of household hazardous waste at your local Civic Amenity Site . Please be advised to contact your Civic Amenity Site (CAS) in advance to ensure that they will accept your waste. Please ensure that all Household Hazardous Waste is presented for disposal in its original container.

Water based paint

If there is water based paint in the tub/can you need to harden it before disposing of the tub/can in the general waste stream. To harden the paint you can buy a paint hardener, or add sawdust, sand or soil to the tin and leave the lid off until the paint becomes solid and dry.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

WEEE is anything powered by a battery or a plug. Do not put WEEE or used batteries in the general waste bin. You can bring your old WEEE appliances to any of Kerry County Council’s Civic Amenity Sites or your electrical retailer will take back old items on a one for one basis when you are buying something new. Disposal is free of charge.

The European Recycling Platform (ERP) also provides free collections in locations throughout Kerry whereby the public can drop off items for recycling. For information on upcoming events visit the ERP website www.erp-recycling.org/ie.
