SALTING AND GRITTING INFORMATION:
SALTING OF ROADS
During freezing temperatures and in the event of prolonged ice/snow, Kerry County Council treats roads across the county using salt which assists in keeping traffic moving. There are almost 5,000km of roads in Kerry so priority must be given to the busiest routes.
You can view the map of routes which are salted here: Salting Routes 2025-2026
DISTRIBUTION OF GRIT
During a prolonged period of cold weather, Kerry County Council makes grit available at almost 100 locations across the county. This grit can be used by individuals, farmers, and communities to improve travel conditions on local roads and footpaths
When grit is made available in this way, it is announced on local media and social media
Here is the list of locations where grit is made available in each of the five Municipal Districts: List of grit locations during severe weather
COMMUNITY RESILIENCE
Everyone has a role to play in support vulnerable neighbours during a prolonged weather emergency. Community groups and individuals can play their part:
- Remember, not everyone will have access to digital resources due to broadband issues, digital literacy, etc. so it might be helpful to reach out to vulnerable people in your local community to explain that there is a wintery weather spell starting tomorrow and they can both prepare for that and stay safe.
- Encourage preparations with elderly and vulnerable people before the severe weather impacts are present.
This might include helping with stock shopping / deliveries and ensuring they have fuel and basic provisions so they don’t have to venture out during the severe weather. - Encourage people in your community not to take journeys which aren’t essential.
- Check in with vulnerable neighbours / community members in a way that is safe. For example, a phone call or message might prevent a journey on an icy road!
