Construction to commence in October 2025

The next phase of the multi-million-euro investment and upgrading of Tralee town centre is to commence shortly. This page sets out all the essential information you need to know about the various stages in the €5.7m project.
Background
Funded by Kerry County Council and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), the Tralee Pavements Phase III – ‘New Road, Island of Geese Road, Rock Street, Gas Terrace, Bridge Lane, Bill Booley Lane and Staughtons Row, ’ project will build on the success of Phase I – ‘The Mall’ and Phase II Bridge Street and Russell Street which involved the development of pedestrian priority ‘shared space’ consisting of a level surface between the footway and the carriageway using high quality stone paving, enabling pedestrians to move freely while reducing the priority of vehicles. Phase III will see a similar shared space developed along New Road and Sections of gas Terrance and Island of Geese Road.
Phase III will see a total of investment of €5.7m on top of the €3.4 Phase II (Russell/Bridge Street), the €3.5m investment on Phase I (The Mall) and the €3m on the the development of the public realm at the Denny Factory site in the Island of Geese. The four projects together represent a total investment of over €16m in Tralee Town Centre in recent years.
Summary of Works to be undertaken
Construction work is set to begin on the project in late October 2025 and is scheduled to last 18 months, but the work will take place in different phases, during different periods of street closures, and with every effort being made to minimise disruption for businesses and customers in the area.
An outline of the proposed project zones are as follows;
Zone 2.1 – Bridge Lane
Zone 2.2 – Bill Booley Lane
Zone 2.3 – Gas Terrace
Zone 2.4 – Island of Geese Road
Zone 2.5 – New Road North
Zone 2.6 – Staughtons Row West
Zone 2.7 – Staughtons Row East
Zone 2.8 – New Road South
Zone 3 – Rock Street

Construction
In order to facilitate works on New Road, Island of Geese Road, Rock Street, Gas Terrace, Bill Booley Lane and Staughtons Row, street/road closures are required. This does not mean, however that a road closure will be in place for this entire period. Instead, works will be phased and not all sections of the listed roads will be closed at the same time. This plan is designed to ensure maximum flexibility for contractors to allow works to be completed as quickly as possible.
Kerry County Council will provide updates on the various phases of the project as it proceeds.
Shareridge Ltd. are the appointed contractors for this project. Work will begin in October 2025. Kerry County Council working with the contractor will endeavour to minimise any disruption during the construction phase.
Key points:
- During the various phases there will be limited access for vehicular traffic
- Provision will be made for taxis to continue to operate from the Bridge Lane rank and to continue to use New Road for as long as possible during the works.
- Alternative arrangements will be made available for Taxis during a number of the work phases.
- Provision will be made for deliveries on a temporary basis for all businesses.
- Pedestrian access to all properties will always be maintained.
- In the coming weeks, a full traffic management plan and phasing of the works will be completed, and all impacted stakeholders will be consulted.
Given the scale of the works there undoubtedly will be disruption. It is however the intention of Kerry County Council and the contractor to consult and work as closely as possible with all impacted businesses and residents in the town centre to minimise this disruption. Kerry County Council will have a dedicated liaison person on the ground during all phases of the works to address any issues that may arise.
The objective is to continue the upgrading and enhancement of Tralee town centre and Kerry County Council greatly appreciates the support and cooperation of local retailers and the wider community.
