THIRD PHASE OF TRALEE TOWN CENTRE WORKS
Public consultation begin on new phase of public realm enhancements
Public consultation has commenced this week on the next phase of multi-million euro enhancement works in Tralee town centre. The new phase of upgrading works in Tralee follows the allocation of funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and construction is expected to commence at the beginning of 2022 following public consultation and a tendering process.
Phase 3 of the Tralee Town Centre Pavements project, funded by Kerry County Council and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, will see a continuation of improvements completed on The Mall and those currently underway in the Russell Street and Bridge Street area.
The proposed works will provide pedestrian friendly linkages between the Island of Geese site (former Denny Site) and the town centre. Road widths are being reduced to slow traffic movements and footpaths widths are being increased to enhance pedestrian safety. Public realm improvements will be carried out along six streets and junctions including:
- Staughton’s Row and Godfrey Place
- New Road and the Island of Geese
- Lower Rock Street
- Lower Castle Street
- Bill Booley’s Lane
- Bridge Lane
The proposals have been published on the Kerry County Council website and submissions, as part of the Part VIII planning process must be submitted by 14 May 2021.
Welcoming the plans, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Terry O’Brien said the investment in Tralee town centre was continuing at an important time for businesses, shoppers and residents.
“It’s very exciting to see the new phase of works being rolled out and with the support of the URDF funding announced recently. This work will further enhance the public realm in the town centre for the benefit of everyone who lives in and visits our beautiful town. I would encourage everyone to participate in the public consultation process and to share your views with us as local councillors.”
Details of proposals:
The works on Staughton’s Row will consist of a new asphalt roadway with stone paved footpaths on either side. Two controlled raised pedestrian crossings are included within the design. The proposals include the addition of mature trees along the length of Staughton’s Row. The junction at New Road, Island of Geese and Bridge Street will include a raised coloured asphalt surface.
New Road will be part asphalt, part stone paved surface along its length. The stone paved level surface will continue towards The Island of Geese road and the proposed public realm development there. The shared surface in this area will continue to Rock Street and shared surface linkages will be provided back to Bridge Street and the Mall via Bill Booley’s Lane and Bridge Lane.
The proposals include modifications to the entrances to the Garda Station and a larger public space. Two controlled crossings will be provided at this location. The Island of Geese Road will be realigned to accommodate an area of designated parking for Garda vehicles. The existing parking and taxi rank will be maintained on Bridge Lane.
Proposals along Rock St include minor revisions to the junction with Russell Street, the extension of a shared surface along the length of Lower Rock St and the introduction of stone paved footpaths along Rock St up to the junction with Pembroke St. The existing controlled pedestrian crossing will be enhanced
The proposed works to the top of Denny St will extend the Phase 1 paving scheme. The proposed works along Castle Street Lower include the provision of stone paving on the footpaths on either side of the street and narrowing of the street to increase footpath widths. Street furniture, seating, planting, and bicycle parking to be incorporated throughout the routes with undergrounding of all overhead cables.
