The aim of the Kerry Age Friendly Programme is to make Kerry a place where people can enjoy a good quality of life at all stages of life.

‘Only in this century has human civilisation made it possible for most people in Western societies to reach the age of seventy and over. Therefore, the shaping of what is possible in old age does not have a long tradition. As a society, we are only at the beginning of a learning process about old age. In this sense, old age is still young, its potential is not fully realized…’

(Baltes and Mayer, quoted at the conference ‘Towards an Age-Friendly Society in Ireland 2006’)

Kerry has one of the oldest population ages in the country with an average age of 40 and Killarney is the town with the highest overall average age of 41.

With our population growing older, and as aging is an experience every person shares, making communities better places in which to grow old is a very important task.

Kerry County Council signed the Dublin Declaration in November 2014 and agreed to participate in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Age-Friendly Initiative.

An Age Friendly Steering Group, reporting to the LCDC is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the strategy and is comprised of representatives from Kerry County Council, HSE, An Gardaí Síochana, Tralee IT, Kerry Education Training Board, Local Development Companies, Chamber Alliances and representatives of older peoples’ groups.

Age-Friendly Kerry is a collaborative and co-ordinated effort with the aim of ensuring all Kerry residents are active, connected, healthy, engaged, and happy in their environment. The initiative considers all aspects of community life, including outdoor spaces and buildings, transport, peoples’ homes, social participation, social inclusion, civic participation, employment, communication, health services, emergency preparedness, and other issues of concern to older people.

Kerry Co Co has ensured that all of the important policy documents include age friendly principles.

A draft Strategy has been developed based on broad consultation.

The Older Persons’ Council will meet to consider this in early April.
