Architecture Kerry 2019 Programme of Events

All boat tours to Fenit Lighthouse on tomorrow Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th scheduled as part of Architecture Kerry have been cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

Tours will be rescheduled directly by the Fenit Harbour Office.

Kerry’s architectural heritage and the county’s architectural landscape will be celebrated during the second annual Architecture Kerry Festival at the end of this month. A wide range of free events including talks, free guided tours, exhibitions, workshops and family events will take place from 27 to 29 September.

The aim of the festival, which is part of the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme, is to highlight the wide diversity of the architectural landscape in Kerry and to make some of the best-known sites of architectural significance in the county accessible to all ages.

Dozens of public and private buildings across the county will open their doors for free guided tours, Kerry County Library will host exhibitions and facilitate workshops for children and Kerry County Museum is hosting a ‘Teen Takeover’ where students from secondary schools across Kerry will run the museum. Their ideas, insights and stories will become part of the museum’s narrative.

Kerry County Council’s Architectural Conservation Officer, Victoria McCarthy, said the programme of events has something for everyone, even those with a passing interest in architecture: ‘Following the success of the event last year, we decided to arrange a series of events again this year to promote and highlight some of our unique and attractive architectural heritage in the county.

‘Throughout Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, thirty different buildings and sites, more than double the number last year, will be opening their doors for free guided tours. Bookings should be made with each venue as numbers are limited in many cases,’ she said.

Among the buildings opening up to the public will be the Ballybunion Slate House (RTÉ Home of the Year finalist), the ARK Building at Astellas, Kerry lighthouses, “Behind-the-Scenes” at Siamsa Tíre and the government offices in Killarney.

The full programme of events is available on the Kerry County Council website or via www.kerrycoco.ie/AK2019 and will be available in council offices and libraries around the county.

Architecture Kerry is supported by Kerry County Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with the OPW, the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, the Irish Architecture Foundation. The event forms part of the Creative Ireland Programme in Kerry.

‘Creative Ireland is an all-of-government national strategy (2017-2022) which places creativity at the centre of public policy. Architecture as an artform is central to the strategy, relevant to the design principles and creativity required within the heritage and contemporary built environment. This festival again promises to be a very engaging and informative weekend for everyone attending,’ said Kate Kennelly, Creative Ireland Coordinator in Kerry.
