The Planning Department’s public office is located in Room 13, Áras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee. 
The public office is open Monday to Friday; 9:00am to 5:00 pm (open through lunch)
The Planning Department is responsible for operating a system of physical planning which facilitates and provides the impetus for economic development while having regard to the protection and preservation of the environment.
The Planning Department deals with the processing of all planning applications for development within the County excluding the administrative areas of Tralee Town Council, Killarney Town Council, and Listowel Town Council. The Planning Department provides technical assistance to the Killarney and Listowel Authorities in relation to applications in their areas.
The Planning Department also plays an important role in the Enforcement of Planning Control.
Planning files for each of the years from 2007 to date are located in the offices of the Planning Department at Aras an Chontae and may be inspected at the public counter. There is no retrieval charge for 2007 files and subsequent years.
The planning files for 2006 and earlier years are stored off site at the councils storage facility. There is a retrieval charge for year 2005 files and earlier. The retrieval charge is 15 euro per file for the first five files and 25 euro per file for the sixth and subsequent file(s).

Calculation of Time limits in the planning application process over the Christmas period
Section 251 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 provides that in calculating any appropriate period or other time limit referred to in the Act or in any regulations made under the Act, the period between the 24th day of December and the 01st day of January, both days inclusive, shall be disregarded. Accordingly, all time limits specified in connection with the planning application process, including time limits relating to the maintenance of site notices and receipt of submissions or observations, are extended by 9 days.
